Happy New Year, we hope you have started the year feeling fresh, healthy and anticipating another rewarding year in one of the best jobs there is.
The start of the year is a good time to review your clinic and determine the direction you are heading professionally and clinically through the year. Self-reflection models are excellent tools for directing your thoughts. I find a simple SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis a useful tool to assess myself as a practitioner and my clinic/business and give me a focus on where I am heading.
We have produced a checklist for your annual housekeeping for the clinic to check everything is in place and up to date. Review your clinic policies and procedures to make sure that they are up to date and being applied. You will find this will give you confidence and peace of mind so you can focus on building your clinic and providing an outstanding service to your patients. It is tempting to ignore these annual checks and neglect the policies and procedures aspect of clinic but this is the foundation of evidence of good clinical practice and important in establishing good, safe procedures in your clinic. There are some annual checks and reviews that should be carried out annually in order to maintain compliance.
In addition to checking your policies and procedures we encourage you to carry out at least one audit in your clinic this year – whether that be a focussed simple audit of patient notes or letters or perhaps taking the time to carry out a patient audit to receive views from patients. It will help you to shape and develop your clinic.
I’ve already proclaimed the benefits of self-reflection but how about carrying out a colleague appraisal to help you both to reflect and develop your practice? You might appraise your reception staff or maybe work with another practitioner appraise one another. You may be able to use this exercise for CPD and it will be of great value in helping you to continue to develop as a practitioner.
Here is the checklist – print it off and make the most of this opportunity.
